Newsworthy Topics of the Summer

There was a lot going on in the summer of 2014 that are newsworthy. The sequel to the Purge came out and it's called The Purge: Anarchy. This movie is a thriller. It grossed $106 million dollars compared to a $9 million dollar budget. This movie is about the same thing as the first Purge, but this instead of filming from the inside of a house during the Purge this movie showed purging out on the streets. I think that's what made it so thrilling and popular. I've seen this movie myself and I would recommend it. Some actors in this movie include Frank Grillo, Carmen Ejogo and Zach Gilford. The producer of the Purge film announced that the third movie is currently in it's works. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Purge:_Anarchy Another topic this summer was the song Fancy by Iggy Azalea, an Australian recording artist. The song is featured by an English singer-songwriter Charli XCX. This is their most successful song because it reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100. It also topped the charts in Canada and New Zealand. The track was also named Billboard's Song if the Summer for 2014. This isn't one of my favorite songs but I think it became so popular because it has an upbeat rhythm and the music video reflected the movie Clueless which is popular. This song still plays constantly on the radio and Iggy has performed it at award shows. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fancy_(Iggy_Azalea_song) A book that was popular this summer is The Fault in Our Stars. This is the sixth novel by John Green. The story comes from the point of view of a sixteen-year-old cancer patient named Hazel Grace that was forced by her parents to attend a support group. There she meets a boy named Augustus Waters who used to play basketball and they end of falling in love. I think that this book is so popular because it's heartfelt and emotional and includes a serious conflict that could lead to a plot twist. This book was turned into a movie this summer that was also very popular. I haven't read the book or seen the movie yet but I plan to because it has been recommended to me several times. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Fault_in_Our_Stars Another popular film that came out this summer was Frozen. This is a movie about two sisters that are princesses and best friends when they are young. They get in accident because the older sister can make ice come out of her ice hands and the younger sister slipped while playing. The older sister feels horrible and locks herself in her room for a long period of time. The younger sister is lonely, but the older sister eventually has to come out and face the village when their parents pass away and she has to become the queen. She tries to hide her hands but when this fails she runs away and the younger sister goes on a journey to find her and bring her back. I think this movie is popular because it's a Disney cartoon, but it teaches real life values. I've watched this movie myself and I recommend it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frozen_(2013_film) Something that was popular in the news was protests and civil disorder that happened the day after the shooting of Michael Brown on August 9th. Michael Brown died after being shot at least six times by Darren Wilson, a 28-year-old Ferguson police officer. Michael Brown was unarmed and had no criminal record. Frustration, anger and grief in the community led to riots that lasted over two weeks. Police established curfews and deployed riot squads to keep things under control. I think this news was popular because it demonstrates unfairness and violence. This news is and was talked about all over. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2014_Ferguson_unrest
